Honor Magic5 Pro Review
17 Sep 2023
The Honor Magic5 Pro is another intriguing top cameraphone that has recently entered international markets. Its distinctive style, first-rate hardware package, and intriguing camera kit will make it stand out. Additionally, it's an ex-Huawei device with access to the whole Google suite and 5G networks. In 2020, Honor and Huawei divorced, and since then, the company has introduced a number of devices free of US restrictions against Huawei. For those seeking a smartphone that is similar to the Huawei P or Mate but has no restrictions, the premium Magic range has always been a fantastic option. And the new Magic5 Pro is best described in that way.
With better camera specs, a brighter display, the most recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU, and a bigger battery, the Honor Magic5 Pro improves on the Honor Magic4 Pro (and Huawei Mate 50 Pro).
A sizable 6.81-inch HDR10+ OLED panel with a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate and 1312p resolution is present. It boasts a promising 12MP camera with a 3D ToF system inside the pill-shaped cutout, is covered by curved glass, and is protected by that. There is also an optical fingerprint scanner under the screen if Face ID unlock is not your thing.
The rear camera configuration follows a well-known principle but ought to perform better. Large sensor and bright wide-angle stabilized lens are features of the 50MP. A 50MP ultrawide camera with autofocus is also available for macro photography. The 50MP zoom camera with a 3.5x periscopic telephoto lens is undoubtedly the most intriguing because, because to the huge sensor, it should also be able to provide up to 10x high-quality lossless zoom. There is yet another 3D ToF system available.
The Honor Magic5 Pro boots the most recent version of Android 13 along with MagicUI 7.1, which is similar to EMUI. You don't need to worry about anything because it has the entire Google infrastructure and apps.
UnBoxing of Honor Magic5 Pro:
A customary black box houses the Honor Magic5 Pro upon delivery. A 66W charger, a USB-A to USB-C cable rated at 6A, and a soft transparent case are all included in the retail package. A thin layer of protective film was already put to the Magic5 Pro at the manufacturing. We pulled it off because it was of fairly poor quality and was a smudge magnet. However, we are confident that many individuals would value having it.
Design & Build of Honor Magic5 Pro:
The dual-glass, curved Honor Magic5 Pro is reminiscent of the Magic4 Pro and shares features like the pill-shaped display cutout and the circular camera island on the back. Like the last phone, this one has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Glass makes up the front panel, which is slightly curved on all sides. Although the camera glass, which resembles a volcano, is a great showstopper here and commands your full attention, the rear one has matching curves. Finally, the metal frame is thinner across the left and right sides and thicker around the top and bottom.
Due to the matt layer on the back panel, it seems less like glass and more like plastic. This is okay, but the good news is that the panel absolutely resists fingerprints and smudges. However, don't anticipate much of a grip.
The 6.81-inch OLED screen with even, narrow bezels is the focal point of the front. The upper left corner of it sports a pill-shaped cutout where you can see the 12MP selfie camera and the ToF 3D technology for face scanning.
While the OLED display beneath is flat as normal, the protective glass is curved more noticeably along its left and right sides. The last component at the front that you probably can't see is the earpiece, which is located above the screen and immediately before the frame. The outlet is exceedingly thin, practically undetectable. It should be noted that the speaker installed here has two sound outlets: a top-firing and a front-firing one.
The matte rear panel is quite the feast; it has this protruding, volcano-like camera housing that terminates in a flat glass surface encircled by a metal ring. The 50MP primary camera, 50MP periscope zoom camera, and 50MP ultrawide camera are all visible here.
Although the Honor Magic5 Pro is a sizable smartphone, its overall curve makes it appear and feel smaller. Even without a case, the grip—while far from ideal—is sufficient to provide a pleasurable experience. However, if you do intend to take several images and movies, a case is required.
Overall, we thought the Magic5 Pro was nice, and even though the handling wasn't anything remarkable, it was acceptable. The design and ingress protection of the phone pass the test for a flagship, and the only area that still needs work is the grip; perhaps a sandblasted frame would have helped.
