A new anti-theft feature dubbed the "kill switch" will be added to smartphones to stem the tide of rising thefts. Samsung and Apple will add such anti-theft features to their smartphones, allowing users to deactivate their handset should it be lost or stolen, the Huffington Post reported on Thursday.
The tech titans hope this pulls the rug out from under those who sell stolen smartphones on the second-hand market, it added.
Samsung will add the feature to all of its new products from July 1, and Apple will follow suit in the coming months. Handset owners can effectively deactivate their devices, even if the SIM card is replaced or their devices are reset to a factory setting.
